Samui Island is a very beautiful island with golden beaches and very pretty scenery, ideal for a relaxing vacation. There is a small but growing gay scene, but note that the hotels listed for Samui are not really gay but are “gay friendly”. Tourists usually outnumber locals by a large margin. There are direct flights from Bangkok, Phuket and Singapore, or you can take the train or bus from Bangkok to Surat Thai, then a bus to the ferry pier.
| GETTING AROUND |
The songtao, a pickup truck with bench seats on the back, is the most usual form of public transport. Red songtaews circle the island and have a flat fare of 20 baht. A few metered taxis are available but they mostly add 90-100 baht to the metered fares. Motorcycle taxis will take you short distances, but check the fare and be aware of accidents.
You can hire jeeps, cars or motorcycles (international driving licence required), but be sure to get 1st class insurance.
Otherwise, try taking a tour from a local agent, to see the many sights of this fascinating region.
