Chiang Mai is often described as Thailand’s “Rose of the North” for its cool climate (part of the year), and picturesque moated city walls.
Its a very easy city to walk around and has a much more relaxed atmosphere than Bangkok. The surroundings offer great opportunities to visit hill tribes, forests, mountains etc. Chiang Mai province is hilly and very pretty.
The gay scene is small but busy, with a number of small gay bars & saunas scattered around the city. There are several gay hotels & guesthouses too. Gay students from the various universities, including the large University of Chiang Mai, are often in evidence. Northern guys are some of the most handsome in Thailand!
You need to beware that some sex workers and other men you may meet may not be Thai but Burmese who have crossed into Thailand to earn better money than they can at home, and many of them are in Thailand illegally.
