Brisbane – After a huge Big Gay Day that saw thousands party all day for a good cause, organisers have confirmed that the event was able to raise A$30,500.00 for local LGBT community organisations.
Monies raised on the day have been split between the Australian Transgender Support Association of Queensland, Open Doors Youth Services, the Gay & Lesbian Welfare Association (GLWA), and Brisbane Pride Festival.
Wickham Hotel representative Ruth Gardner told QNews while everybody involved was proud of how successful this year’s event was, the real satisfaction comes from the organisations that they are able to assist.
For us Big Gay Day is always a lot of hard work but it’s all worth it when we can see that work benefiting people in the community. It’s something that we are all really proud of,” Gardner told QNews.
A lot of the organisations that we contribute to are not funded. They work for the community so it it vital that we, the community, are there to support them. Big Gay Day was founded on the backbone of suicide prevention, and to this day that still drives the direction of where the funds go to.”
Such a large event, of course, requires a large team of people to make it happen, and Wickham management wanted to express their gratitude to everyone involved.
We would like to give a big thank you to the volunteers who turn up every year. They always go above and beyond setting up and pulling down the event,” Gardner explained. “Also to our family of hotels who send roughly 50 to 60 extra staff to help us make the day successful. But most importantly we would like to thank the community who continually show up and who are so generous in giving to the charities.
