China is a huge and very diverse country. Gay activity is tolerated in a very few places (mainly large cities) but the political scene in China can mean rapid changes in official attitudes. The authorities have recently admitted that gays and lesbians do exist and have begun working with gay groups in a very limited way. Places listed here could change or close at short notice. If you know about any new places, or any changes to those places listed here, please let us know.

Cosmo Grand Rock Plaza (Jushi Dasha), Gongti Bei Lu, opposite Asia Hotel near the Dongsishitiao subway station. They've separated the dance floor by a small hallway from the main bar area which seems to make it a great place to get to know people, then dance the night away. Reasonable drink prices
Drag On Bar The bar is at De Sheng Men (tell taxi drivers: De Sheng Men jian lou) - near north-western corner of and immediately off the 2nd ring road, north side. De Sheng Men jian lou is one of the original gates of old bj and the bar is within the gate! Great location if a bit far. Entrance is from the south-east corner, should see signs. On the ground floor, large outdoor sitting and enclosed bar area, underneath which is the dance club. All newly renovated. The owner, Sam, is always around; very friendly guy who speaks English, as the bartenders (but not the wait staff - they have English drinks menus), all friendly and cute. Cabs going home aren't too difficult to catch as the gate is at a major intersection. Upstairs, on the terrace of the gate, is a beer garden (presently rmb5 for a big mug of qingdao draft) but not exclusively gay. Good views from there.

Nanjing
Reader reports: Cruising areas at your own risk: The street behind Shanghai Lu, or behind the Xi Yuan, the international students' dormitory of Nanjing University. At night, you can always walk along the dark part of the street and find men lined up waiting for an.encounter. These men seem to be the nicest and safest out of all the "cruising" spots in Nanjing. Fu Zi Miao . If you're looking at the main gate (Da Men Kou) there is a bus staion to the left which, after dark, turns into a spot scattered with guys wanting a quickie or perhaps something more. Do NOT trust anyone you meet at this kind of place. The men seem to be untrustworthy and perhaps would beat you or steal from you. This is not true for all, of course, but especially if you are foreign--WATCH YOURSELF CAREFULLY! The famous Tequila Bar. Frequented by many foreign business people and students... as well as prostitutes, both male and female. This bar is really sleezy and, again, don't trust too many people you meet here. Scarlet's bar on Beijing Xi Lu is also popular with foreign students (mostly on the weekends) and it's rumored that the boss from there is also gay. His staff is full of young, cute boys. The Piano Bar near Xin Jie Kou is owned by a gay Taiwanese guy who has the most beautiful, young, polite boys working for him.
